State Bank Of India

IIPM - Admission Procedure

The brand has miraculously catapulted itself from rank 50 (last year) to rank amidst the cream of Indian brands!

You State Bank Of Indiaought to believe it; 90 million Indians can’t be wrong. With a gargantuan customer base and an all encompassing reach, State Bank of India springboards to the top 20, securing a place at the 18th position in the top 100. And what’s important is that the brand has now got a man at its helm, who is on a mission. O. P. Bhatt, the current Chairman of SBI means business and has thrown himself into giving SBI a complete makeover to unlock its brand equity. While former Chairman, A. K. Purwar focused more on overseas acquisitions, Bhatt has got back the focus on Indian market, with the ‘Pure Banking. Nothing Else’ tagline. Termed as the big daddy of all Indian banks, SBI has managed to break the taboo that public sector enterprises do not make good brands. SBI boasts of a staggering reach with 9,000 branches, along with the largest network of ATMs all across India. Recently the bank celebrated its bi-centenary. Its sheer size not only helps it to withstand the troughs and crests of business cycles, but also helps the bank in quenching the ever growing appetite of Indian consumers.

All’s Lite and Diet!

With brands, ad-land goes green too...

It was a couple of years back that Pepsi came out with Diet Pepsi, and while the variant did make news, it did not become a rage overnight. But had the drink been launched in these times (read healthy, as everyone goes Diet and Lite, even airlines, for namesake!), the drink would have sold like hot cakes. But this isn’t about Pepsi’s timing, instead about the latest health obsession of corporates which is rubbing onto the advertising industry as well! Ad-frat is increasingly Tapping into the psyche of this new ‘Health Brigade’ coming out with innovative campaigns with an underlying health message. And there’s a new task at hand – to sell the health quotient. So we have a brand like Dabur coming out with energetic ads for its line of Real Activ fruit juices, Amul launching a low fat bread spread named ‘Amul Lite’ and even a chewing gum – Happydent White – promoting the ‘health’ advantage of chewing gums!

Among all food majors, Nestlé seems to be the healthiest of the lot, consistently unleashing new health-related ads. It started off with Maggi’s ‘Veg Atta Noodles’ with a tagline that said ‘Taste Bhi, Health Bhi’; and continued the trend with its 98% fat-free ‘Fresh n’ Natural Dahi’. More recently, they have launched the new ‘Kit Kat Lite’ – with 50% less sugar. Not just these, even 7Up’s mascot, Fido Dido, has switched onto the new 7Up Light.

However, the profitability of these health variants is still to be established. Ad guru, Prahlad Kakar, opines, “These health commercials indulge in ‘tokenism’ creating an impression that everyone benefits from it, whereas in reality, very few people actually do. So if a company says that their ACs kill bacteria and give out fresh air, it may benefit people who use it... but how about the environmental damage caused by these very ACs? Also, while packaged fruit juices may be nutritious, the fact is that they give just around 30% value of a fresh fruit. What we need is more responsible advertising on worthwhile causes.” We couldn’t agree less!

Come, meet the new World Bank boss!

ARINDAM CHAUDHURI’S 4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE

Now it’s clear! All the talks about Tony Blair being the next World Bank chief were not quite right! The US President, George W. Bush, has nominated Robert Zoellick – former US Deputy Secretary of State – as the next World Bank head. Zoellick will succeed Paul Wolfowitz, who is going to step down at the end of the June. Wolfowitz was mired in a scandal suit after it came to light that he had given a hefty raise to his girlfriend, Shaha Riza – who worked for the World Bank too – in 2005 (soon after he had taken over as the World Bank chief). The findings by a special bank panel stated that he had acted unethically and had broken the bank rules by acting in the way he did. After the findings were revealed, Wolfowitz had to step down. The newly nominated World Bank chief – Zoellick has served in various positions at the Department of the Treasury from 1985 to 1988. In August 1992, he was appointed as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Assistant to the US President. He was also appointed as Bush’s personal representative for the G7 Economic Summits in 1991 and 1992. In the 2000 US presidential election campaign, Zoellick had served as a foreign policy advisor to George W. Bush, as part of a group led by Condoleezza Rice, that called itself The Vulcans. He was named US Trade Representative at the beginning of the younger Bush’s first term and on January 7, 2005, Bush nominated him Deputy Secretary of State. Welcome aboard the Bank, Mr. Zoellick!

My family’s wheels!

Why Study Abroad When IIPM Gives You 3 global Advantages!

You’d hate to keep a chauffeur for this car...

I amAjay Kaul, CEO, Dominos’ Pizza (India) on Honda Accord no car buff or an expert to comment on the technical details of a car. But as a consumer what attracted me to the Honda Accord was its driving seat arrangement. Ever since I started my corporate journey, my car has always been a place which converts me from an office guy to a family man, so I prefer driving it on my own. So my car has to have adequate facilities in the driver space.

The car is also very comfortable and spacious, a joy ride even for the back seaters, especially in the crowded roads of Delhi. I remember when I (with my family) drove to Shimla and while coming back my kids were sleeping. We’d reached and they didn’t even realize it. That made me feel that I had made the ultimate choice for my entire family!

As a driver, I feel it has the best acceleration and pick up. Perhaps that’s why the car is so wonderful – the best Honda car around.

It’s fight over coffee for lovers of tea!

Why Study Abroad When IIPM Gives You 3 global Advantages!

Starbucks’ imminent entry has already begun making other retailers wary...

When It’s fight over coffee for lovers of tea!Karan Johar crosses his legs demurely, seated across beautiful people on the sets of his show, he not only endears Koffee with Karan to millions of enraptured fans, but also serves as a clear reminder to this tea-loving nation’s newfound love for coffee beans. Reason enough to egg on coffee bars and pubs mushrooming across urban India, which have become popular hangout zones for the young and young at heart.

Emerging as the golden goose in the gastronomic Indian economy, organized coffee retail is frothing over with potential. India already boasts an exorbitant café market of Rs.8 billion (according to Technopak Advisors) and the urban demand is growing at a breakneck 35% per annum. And while early movers in the segment like Barista, Café Coffee Day (CCD) and Nescafé coffee shops were till now among the few fighting it out for a piece of action, the imminent entry of the world’s largest premium speciality coffee pub – Starbucks – by the end of 2007, is set to usher in a shake up in the current arithmetic of coffee chains in the country.

Here’s what the current dynamics of the coffee pub culture in India looks like. CCD and Barista were the first to popularise the concept of café bars in India, with their unique blend of aromatic beans and attractive ambience. Flourishing on the Indian palate, the two chains have proliferated over the past few years with 426 Café Coffee Day (CCD) and 170 outlets for Baristatoday. Furious expansions have ensured that the two biggies have remained the main contenders in coffee retail for years, constantly vying to outdo the other. Of course, the big two are flanked by numerous others of their ilk, including Costa Coffee, Coffee World, Mocha, et al, but even between all of them, it’s tough to mop up the entire urban demand, which has a combined scope for a whopping 3,000 retail outlets vis-à-vis the 700 odd coffeeoutlets in the country now.

Against Who’s the hottest?this backdrop, it comes as no surprise that the $3 billion Starbucks, the world’s largest coffee chain, is greedily eyeing an Indian odyssey. And despite a few continuing hiccups in government formalities that would officially mark its entry, this US-based coffee chain has already announced the rollout of its first store in October this year. Starbucks hopes to test Indian waters with five stores at strategic malls in Mumbai and Delhi to begin with; followed with the possibility of adding over 100 stores every year for the next five years.

There’s another reason why Starbucks wants to enter the Indian market soon. According to a 2006 ENAM Securities survey, Indian consumers are spending nearly 51% of private final consumption expenditure on eating out. This is truly mouth-watering for almost every global giant in the food and beverage’s space. Italy-based Lavazza already acquired Barista for $120 million in March this year, while Australia’s Gloria Jeans is also not far behind. Be that as it may, Starbucks wants to move in for the kill quickly, before other global forays make any major headway with the coffee-drinking consumers.

Predictability, with such a big global star shinning in the Indian sky, the duopoly market of the first movers Barista and CCD is under threat. And to worsen the situation for the country’s biggest coffee chain – CCD, its director Naresh Malhotra (credited for metamorphosing a Bengaluru-based brand into a national brand) bid adieu to CCD in the last week of June 2007. Already, former Coffee World CEO, Anoop Saquiera has joined Starbucks in India, and the market buzz is that Naresh Malhotra is also headed in the similar direction.

So will the exit of Malhotra, combined with Starbucks knocking at the door, bog CCD down? Clearly not, if present management is to be believed. Simran Sablok, GM-Marketing, CCD says, “We are aware of Indian taste buds and our pricing is always economical, so even if any other player comes in, it won’t disturb us,” adding that CCD’s trendy brand image will also help the chain sustain its popularity.

Moreover, as experiences of other global food and beverage global biggies in India shows, a key mantra for success in the Indian milieu lies in indianising the menu with prices that are easy on the pocket. But strangely, sources in Starbucks India confirm that the global major is not paying heed to any of the two, at least for now. Instead, the company is relentlessly focussing all efforts to hire manpower from rivals.

Affirms Partho Dattagupta, CEO of Barista Coffee Company, “flagship products should always be Indian and you have to price them keeping in mind the Indian consumers.” But pricing may ultimately not be too big a problem for Starbucks in India. Despite modest pricing claims, most coffee chains, actually sell a litre of coffee at costs that are higher than a litre of oil. Rather Starbucks’ entry will positively raise the competitive barriers in the segment and take it far beyond the present duopoly.

So will Barista and CCD have to stop bickering against one another and think of fighting the shark (Starbucks) together? Maybe. To counter Starbucks’ imminent entry, CCD has begun looking at greener pastures beyond the homely milieu, with a plan to invest Rs.100 crore for setting up parlours in Pakistan, Poland and several other countries. “We are going to have a strong global presence, at the same time, strengthen our Indian presence. It’s not that we are competing against anyone, but it’s a part of our strategy to reach every corner of the country,” explains Simran. With 426 stores spread in 40 cities, CCD minted an incredible turnover of Rs.4,500 million for this fiscal. It plans to add at least 50 more stores and also restructure its accessories venture. And rest assured, these additions will happen much before Indians start having coffee with ‘stars’.

Not to be left out, Barista has also armoured itself with a plan of opening as many as 100 more stores by 2007. But to compete with Starbucks, these players will have to think of more ammunition than just splattering India’s geography with more coffee outlets. They need to create a strong logistics chain and a sturdy raw material base. This is where Barista or global coffee chains like Costa Coffee and Coffee World have missed out. On the contrary, CCD, being a part of Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Co., has abundant raw material at its disposal at lower costs. Realising its importance, Coffee World, after being in India for more than 3 years, has suddenly woken up to create its own sourcing hub in India now. Others will no doubt, follow soon.

In as much, Starbucks has unwittingly ensured that coffee retail in India will soon get another face lift, leaving behind some very coffee-happy consumers in its wake. After all, branded chains are already waking up and smelling the coffee...

Nuclear sis-in-law

Imposed moratorium on testing!

AccordingPokharan II site - Barricading the Indian nuclear ambitions to the US Administration’s dictionary – Iran is a ‘nuclear outlaw’; Pakistan a nuclear enfant terrible and India is a responsible nation which observes the rules of the non-proliferation game without formally being a part of it. India cannot be a ‘nuclear brother’, because it does not have an inherent right to be part of global nuclear club. At best, India can be an attached nuclear weapon power and is therefore entitled for nuclear sister-in law status.

The latest breakthrough achieved on the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal has finally set the ball rolling for a new era in US non-proliferation regime and India’s foreign policy. The Indian establishment is happy with the marriage of convenience (123 agreement), for it is now assured of the assistance, albeit in the civilian nuclear arena only. The moment India decides to re-test its nuclear capabilities, stringent US domestic laws will come into force, shutting off the nuclear supplies.

Why is the US getting into a relationship with India? Following double standards in dealing differently with Iran & India – the US is sure to earn opprobrium from international community. “In a realist world, national interests are paramount. India has given the nod for being a trustworthy US ally for all future political games in the region,” Dr. Kalyan Raman, a noted security analyst told B&E. By making India sign an agreement, the US has made it difficult for India to launch being a fullfledged nuclear weapons nation. And for long time, the Indian dreams will remain confined to “nukes in being” only. .

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul

The Sunday Indian - India's Greatest News weekly

Who would have thought that one of the world’s most opulent hotels, was once a prison! But then again, this one’s an exception in every sense of the word. Regularly featured in the top 10 list of hotels, the Four Seasons, is a world class hotel, which captures the old-world charm of Istanbul.

Four Seasons Hotel IstanbulTHE VIEW: Set in old quarter of the city, it can fool one into believing that they’ve traveled back in time. From the deluxe rooms and suites, can be seen the inner courtyard of the famous Blue Mosque or the iconic Hagia Sophia.

ARCHI TYPE: This neo-classical structure painstakingly restored with much of the original marble, antique rugs and chandeliers complementing the elegant interiors. Each one of its 65 rooms are no less than a work of art.

BON APPÉTIT: Although the Seasons Restaurant is the only one it can boast of, it is known to be the best of its kind in Istanbul. Featuring delicious local and international cuisines (try the Mediterranean) its children’s menu is sure to keep the little ones happy.

AROUND THE CORNER: Being in the middle of the old city, it’s a brief walk from cultural landmarks like Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace & Grand Bazaar.

FROM UNDER THE CARPET: The guttural Turkish language could pose a problem in getting your accent right. Take your time.

IN ESSENCE: Experience Turkey the right way….and feel like a Pasha.

Tilt the hilt of tilting!

The Sunday Indian - India's Greatest News weekly

The might of knights kept alive through jousting...
Virtues The might of knights kept alive through jousting...of courage, justice & kindness blended with honour and brewed with hearty amounts of courtly love concoct a personality trait irresistible to the ladies. Albeit now steadily on the decline, chivalry was once a code of conduct and thus, a way of life for knights in the medieval ages. It also is perhaps solely responsible for the perpetual longing in women for their ‘knight in shining armour’, which after all is, a history proven possibility. These days the closest the ladies can get to ‘knights’ is at The Lulworth Castle from July 22 to August 28, 2007, which provides a medieval village setting for Jousting Shows, and there Knights of Lulworth battle twice everyday.

A European sport from the medieval times, jousting celebrates the valiancy of knights. Two armoured knights with a weapon in one hand (most oft en a lance), perched upon their steeds, ride towards each other aiming to un-horse the other. Where the lance is made of wood (solid oak in the past), the stunt of un-horsing the opponent was known as tilting. Armed with a weapon (lance, dagger, axe or a sword), the combatant doesn’t get many chances for performing except for three encounters in each phase.

DuringTilt the hilt of tilting! yesteryears, the game wasn’t as popular in martial sports category but once it was introduced in the tournaments, there was no looking back. The castles and palaces were improvised by adding a tiltyard for holding jousting competitions. The game soon started to render huge sums to the knights who took up the challenge of participating in this dangerous game. Hungry for riches, Henry II of France and many others lost their lives. That could be one crucial reason why the International Jousting Association, which governs modern day jousting, gives no points for un-horsing the rival and awards it instead for breaking the tip of the wooden lance.

While Chronicles of Froissart give a written account of medieval jousting, the same can be seen and experienced in today’s Renaissance fairs and festivals. Those who get intrigued by the courage and romance of the Middle Ages shouldn’t miss the feats of arms by the Knights of Lulworth, though no more performed for rescuing dainty damsels in distress!

Dalits’ need genuine support

While Tamil Nadu reservation history (in %)majority of the Indians were busy preparing for the 60th anniversary of Indian independence, the Supreme Court for a change was busy dealing with the ‘reservation’ issue – a chronic ailment plaguing the nation for centuries. On August 14, the five judge bench led by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan made a landmark observation (which largely went unnoticed) stating that the “reservations cannot continue indefinitely & must come to an end one day.”

Yes, ever since the dawn of independence, India has been anxiously waiting to see the end of caste-based apartheid, existing in the Indian psyche. This was the raison d’etre for Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian constitution to introduce caste-based reservations into polity. But little had he known that the exploitative mindset of the political class would make this well-meaning gesture into a monster, gnawing at the very roots of our unity. Forget, economic upliftment of the down castes, 60 years down the road the reservations have only deepened the fissures in our society, pitting the higher castes against the deprived in open street battles. Far from erasing the Manu Smriti from the Indian mindset, the quota system has given ready-to fire ammunition to the fundamentalists. Tamil Nadu, where the very essence of Dalit empowerment has been reduced to quota percentages – a mind boggling 60% reservation for the lower castes has undermined the clause of equality enshrined in the constitution. If only, the Indian polity had prevented politicians from going overboard with enhanced quota schemes, the nation would certainly have looked far more appealing at 60.

“On Revolutionary Medicine”

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

Cuba’s “On Revolutionary Medicine”public health care system which began to take shape post-revolution is considered to be one the best run system in the world. A completely state run model, based on providing hygienic health services to the entire population. This is enshrined in the Cuban Constitution which explicitly states that “Everyone has the right to health protection and care”. According to the WHO, the doctor to patient ratio in Cuba is 1:170 , the second best in the world. Preventive medicine & diagnostic treatment are rendered free in Cuba. Much before the world woke up to the menace of AIDS, Cuba had begun its AIDS prevention drive. The UNAIDS Report 2003 estimates that only 0.05% of Cuban population is afflicted with AIDS. The generic anti-retroviral drug is produced by the state at a cost which is even below that of the similar product manufactured in some of the developing countries. The health indicators in one of the last bastions of communism speak the story about efficacy of the system. The infant mortality rate is 5 deaths per 1,000. Male life expectancy is 75 years and for females this age is 80 years. And all, this has been achieved, perfecting a system through effective controls and proper implementation of government intentions.

...before it’s too late…

After Here the administrators get a Free Lunchthe unification of Yemen in 1990, the rendezvous with development took place at unprecedented rate in this small Arab country. But in the face of heavily armed citizenry, internal violence and tribal influence limit the government initiative of bringing peace & security to the nation. Yemen ranks 150th on HDI, which by any standard is not worth appreciating even though it has developed legal safeguards & laws, intended to prevent human rights along with allowing citizens a degree of freedom of expression, which is not present in many other Arab countries. But lack of accountability eats away whatever good could have accrued to this nation. Most of Yemenis in government positions do not perform their duties, thus hampering the administrative functioning at large. On the economic front, trade & international relations suffer due to absence of proper laws.

For Yemen has a tremendous location advantage for it to take clue form other growing middle east economies & leverage them to their advantage.

No U-turn

Mayhem continues…

Uganda It’s high time that they fi ll the racial gapis stuck in a web with no escape routes perhaps. Though a country endowed with rich mineral resources & fertile agricultural lands, forget the zenith, Uganda’s economy has not even touched the base of the economic plateau. President Yoweri Museveni is to be largely blamed for such exacerbations of misery of the common Ugandans even though he has been instrumental in getting Uganda rid of the mayhem of Idi Amin. Idi Amin became a thing of the past but the mayhems continued. With regional conflicts in Rwanda, Burundi, Congo & Northern Uganda, violation of human rights by the UPDF soldiers, it has always been a foregone conclusion that the Uganda economy would be affected. Moreover, factors like widespread AIDS, kidnapping of children (at least 30,000), young boys made to ransack villages & abduction of girls & pushing them into prostitution, pose a ripple effect on country’s growth. Uganda can regenerate. All that it needs is a saviour.

Nissan goes diesel in Japan

IIPM PUBLICATION

NissanNissan goes diesel in Japan is all set to drive the diesel car in Japan by 2008. X-Trail Sport Utility Vehicle’s diesel version is being launched by Nissan Motors in the third largest auto market in the world. This new introduction might just revive the nearly dead diesel passenger car market in Japan. With partner Renault SA, the company is designing an engine which would meet the new emission standards in the country. In autumn, 2008, Japanese will have a local branded diesel car after many years. Mercedes- Benz E320 CDI Sedan from the stable of Daimler- Chrysler is the only other diesel passenger car on the Japanese roads. Rising gasoline prices have forced a number of consumers in the developed world to move toward diesel. Like Europe, even Japan is expected to become a high volume diesel market soon.

All that glitters...

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

... if not gold, has got to be at the Gold Coast!

Once ... if not gold, has got to be at the Gold Coast!you experience it, you’re bound to treasure it. For life. And that’s a Gold Coast promise to you. Particularly, when holding forth from the Land of Oz, there is no reason why one shouldn’t enthusiastically fall for it! Merry round the year, it only spruces for the better with the GC Bazaar.

Fun, larger than life, is what Australia conjures. As if its glorious bounties – the sunny climes, endless beaches, or cornucopian rainforests – weren’t inviting enough already, the concerted promotion drives bring in wide-eyed travellers by the droves to the country. It is to this welcome- tourists effect that Gold Coast inaugurated its 30-day carnival on May 29 promising a month-long medley of ‘fun, food and fashion.’ A quick rundown.

Very entertaining. ... if not gold, has got to be at the Gold Coast!Very lively. Very pleasant. Very GC. With a catch phrase like that (the last bit), one can imagine the line-up of events to celebrate the good times, ranging from the verdant to the whacky. How does the Burleigh Winter Solstice Festival sound? Nothing very bizarre, except that a winter festival in June sounds plain funny to folks like us north of the equator. Celebrations on the shortest day and longest night include milling at local craft stalls, frolicking with the street entertainers, dabbling in some pavement art while savouring large helpings of sumptuous victuals. And that’s one of the highlights of the festival for those being drawn in from either side of the equator. Indians, though, shouldn’t mind being a part of the exclusive invitees list, for as Sharon Harvey, GC Tourism Director, India, reveals, “Having spent millions of dollars in preparing for the gala events, we aimed at an annual tourism spend of $6 billion. I’ve visited the 4 corners of this land – Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi, and it’s almost like visiting 4 different countries. Our frontline staff and chefs found the diversities mindboggling but in no case are we leaving any scope for disappointment for our Indian vacationers.”

Stringing ... if not gold, has got to be at the Gold Coast!together an entire gamut of activities, the Gold Coast carnival makes the whole south-east corner of Queensland swell in a daily riot of revelry. One of Australia’s favourite chill-out destinations with an extravagant assortment of hotels, you would easily tire out with just having fun – such is the choc-a-bloc schedule for the month’s calendar. Remind yourself what it is to shop for real farm fresh produce while the air strains live music at Main Beach. Leave the routine pandemonium of life far behind at the Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat Health Discovery in Tallebudgera. Behold the exhilarating rarity of whale watching as the mammoth mammals set off northwards for the breeding season. Besides, Polo enthusiasts can enjoy all the fervour of the game during on the Gold Coast Polo International Day while golfers tee off on supreme greens.

The grand finale – a virtual tour de force – is the Blues at the Hard Rock Café. After you’ve had your fill of cocktails and couture in the thousand five hundred square kilometres of decorated area of all the rest of Gold Coast, it would be time to get blown away by the best of Blues talent armed with steels, stomps and harps as they perform live to a whooping head banging audience in attendance. So, the next time you get set in the mood to groove, plan it for nothing less than a month, and nowhere far from GC! The extravaganzas galore promise more than just a month-load of memories...
