Republican Party’s adherence to an outdated ideology only leaves it with bigger problems

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

Republican Party’s adherence to an outdated ideology only leaves it with bigger problems. It can’t offer domestic policies that respond to the public’s real needs. So how can it win elections? The answer, for a while, was a combination of distraction and disenfranchisement.

The 9/11 attacks were a massive, providential distraction; until then the public, realising that Bush wasn’t the moderate he played in the 2000 election, was growing increasingly unhappy with his administration. And they offered many more such opportunities for further distractions. Rather than debating with Democrats on the issues, the GOP could denounce them as soft on terror. And do you remember the terror alert, based on old and questionable information, that was declared right after the 2004 Democratic National Convention?

The realty King

IIPM PUBLICATION

After what would seem like an eon for K. P. Singh, DLF is inching closer to a high stake comeback on the bourses. When one looks at the reworked red herring prospectus, the company’s business model does look promising as ever. The company claims land reserves across India of around 10,255 acres with a developable area of around 574 million square feet. The company’s balance sheet is in the pink of health, with net income for 2006 at Rs.12.42 billion (CAGR of 54% since 2004) and net profit going strong at Rs.1.92 billion (CAGR of 89%). And if one wishes for an insight into what this issue would mean for promoter valuations; the net worth at fair price of Rs.550, based on the expected mobilisation of Rs.110 billion for 202 million equity shares for the promoters (K. P. Singh & his son Rajiv, who hold over 87% of the stakeholding) would amount to a whopping $19.13 billion.

Restore people’s faith in the nation

MANAGEMENT GURU

In what may change the political contours of Indo-China region in months to come; the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand has decided to go on with its plan to conduct parliamentary elections by the end of 2007. The move is bound to bring much needed respite to a nation that has been ruled time and again by military establishments. The announcement for this election came from the EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond in the wake of his meeting with the members of the international forum that wants the restoration of democracy in Thailand. However, he maintained that the elections can only be held once the new constitution is formulated and enforced.

China red hot for luxury

MANAGEMENT GURU

First Goldman Sachs and now Credit Suisse; both are ready with their version of statistical estimation of the consumption behaviour of the Chinese. In 2005, Goldman Sachs predicted that by 2015, China would top the global list in terms of consumption of luxury goods. A survey conducted by Credit Suisse in 2006 further vindicates the prediction made by Goldman Sachs; the survey results reveal that by 2015 China will overtake Japan, Germany, Britain and Italy to become the second largest consumer goods market globally, just behind USA. Robust economic growth, increasing population and accelerating urbanisation have been cited to be the major
forces propelling the consumption behaviour.

On the global outlook and acceptance of Indian cinema:

MANAGEMENT GURU

I am not a soothsayer, a palm reader or a tarot card reader, and I have no concrete idea of the future! Going by what is happening right now is – yes, we do not possess a significant share of the global market as far as Indian movies (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other regional industries) are concerned. We aren’t a force to reckon with. You have to define the game that you are playing. In my opinion, there is nothing called as the next level. There’s a sea out there. As long as we are content remaining a small fish confined to a pond, it sounds fine. But if you wish to swim along with the sharks and the big boys, it’s a different ball game altogether. In that bigger context, stories would have to be more universally told in terms of scope, irrespective of whether the language remains Hindi, Bengali, or any of the other Indian regional languages. And at the end of the day, you can’t have simplistic solutions to such matters because the paradigm is so diverse!
