The Indian medical tourism industry, worth $333 million, could bring India an additional 50 billion-100 billion Rupees ($1.1 billion-2.2 billion) in revenue every year by 2012, according to a study conducted by CII and McKinsey. But India is still not there, when it comes to medical tourism. According to world medical tourism statistics, 1,50,000 foreign patients came to India last year, as compared to Singapore, which attracted 2,00,000 and Thailand-undoubtedly the world’s favourite with 6,00,000 patients last year. Dr. Trehan reiterates the importance of upholding India’s image and believes that “only high-end hospitals should be handling overseas patients.” Steps like a recommended list of hospitals (already given to the Ministry of Tourism) for foreign patients will go a long way to ensure this.......
