Enough is enough

Dalits’ need genuine support

While Tamil Nadu reservation history (in %)majority of the Indians were busy preparing for the 60th anniversary of Indian independence, the Supreme Court for a change was busy dealing with the ‘reservation’ issue – a chronic ailment plaguing the nation for centuries. On August 14, the five judge bench led by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan made a landmark observation (which largely went unnoticed) stating that the “reservations cannot continue indefinitely & must come to an end one day.”

Yes, ever since the dawn of independence, India has been anxiously waiting to see the end of caste-based apartheid, existing in the Indian psyche. This was the raison d’etre for Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian constitution to introduce caste-based reservations into polity. But little had he known that the exploitative mindset of the political class would make this well-meaning gesture into a monster, gnawing at the very roots of our unity. Forget, economic upliftment of the down castes, 60 years down the road the reservations have only deepened the fissures in our society, pitting the higher castes against the deprived in open street battles. Far from erasing the Manu Smriti from the Indian mindset, the quota system has given ready-to fire ammunition to the fundamentalists. Tamil Nadu, where the very essence of Dalit empowerment has been reduced to quota percentages – a mind boggling 60% reservation for the lower castes has undermined the clause of equality enshrined in the constitution. If only, the Indian polity had prevented politicians from going overboard with enhanced quota schemes, the nation would certainly have looked far more appealing at 60.

“On Revolutionary Medicine”

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

Cuba’s “On Revolutionary Medicine”public health care system which began to take shape post-revolution is considered to be one the best run system in the world. A completely state run model, based on providing hygienic health services to the entire population. This is enshrined in the Cuban Constitution which explicitly states that “Everyone has the right to health protection and care”. According to the WHO, the doctor to patient ratio in Cuba is 1:170 , the second best in the world. Preventive medicine & diagnostic treatment are rendered free in Cuba. Much before the world woke up to the menace of AIDS, Cuba had begun its AIDS prevention drive. The UNAIDS Report 2003 estimates that only 0.05% of Cuban population is afflicted with AIDS. The generic anti-retroviral drug is produced by the state at a cost which is even below that of the similar product manufactured in some of the developing countries. The health indicators in one of the last bastions of communism speak the story about efficacy of the system. The infant mortality rate is 5 deaths per 1,000. Male life expectancy is 75 years and for females this age is 80 years. And all, this has been achieved, perfecting a system through effective controls and proper implementation of government intentions.

...before it’s too late…

After Here the administrators get a Free Lunchthe unification of Yemen in 1990, the rendezvous with development took place at unprecedented rate in this small Arab country. But in the face of heavily armed citizenry, internal violence and tribal influence limit the government initiative of bringing peace & security to the nation. Yemen ranks 150th on HDI, which by any standard is not worth appreciating even though it has developed legal safeguards & laws, intended to prevent human rights along with allowing citizens a degree of freedom of expression, which is not present in many other Arab countries. But lack of accountability eats away whatever good could have accrued to this nation. Most of Yemenis in government positions do not perform their duties, thus hampering the administrative functioning at large. On the economic front, trade & international relations suffer due to absence of proper laws.

For Yemen has a tremendous location advantage for it to take clue form other growing middle east economies & leverage them to their advantage.

No U-turn

Mayhem continues…

Uganda It’s high time that they fi ll the racial gapis stuck in a web with no escape routes perhaps. Though a country endowed with rich mineral resources & fertile agricultural lands, forget the zenith, Uganda’s economy has not even touched the base of the economic plateau. President Yoweri Museveni is to be largely blamed for such exacerbations of misery of the common Ugandans even though he has been instrumental in getting Uganda rid of the mayhem of Idi Amin. Idi Amin became a thing of the past but the mayhems continued. With regional conflicts in Rwanda, Burundi, Congo & Northern Uganda, violation of human rights by the UPDF soldiers, it has always been a foregone conclusion that the Uganda economy would be affected. Moreover, factors like widespread AIDS, kidnapping of children (at least 30,000), young boys made to ransack villages & abduction of girls & pushing them into prostitution, pose a ripple effect on country’s growth. Uganda can regenerate. All that it needs is a saviour.

Nissan goes diesel in Japan

IIPM PUBLICATION

NissanNissan goes diesel in Japan is all set to drive the diesel car in Japan by 2008. X-Trail Sport Utility Vehicle’s diesel version is being launched by Nissan Motors in the third largest auto market in the world. This new introduction might just revive the nearly dead diesel passenger car market in Japan. With partner Renault SA, the company is designing an engine which would meet the new emission standards in the country. In autumn, 2008, Japanese will have a local branded diesel car after many years. Mercedes- Benz E320 CDI Sedan from the stable of Daimler- Chrysler is the only other diesel passenger car on the Japanese roads. Rising gasoline prices have forced a number of consumers in the developed world to move toward diesel. Like Europe, even Japan is expected to become a high volume diesel market soon.
